New issues of Aland

The latest stamps of Aland issued in the period August and October 1999 with some interesting themes.

Sailing

2.70 Sailing ships.
The Aland sailing clubs are very active culminating in the summer months. Competitions and other events are arranged several times a week and the number of competitors are usually large. On this new stamp the Match Racing is pictured. The stamp was designed by Martin Mörck and issued on 5 August 1999.

UPU

2.90 Scene at airport.
The Universal Postal Union celebrates its 125th anniversary in 1999. Peter Bergström designed a stamp picturing the Aland airmail of today. The mail conveyances by air to Aland started in 1929. On this on 25 September 1999 issued stamp a modern aeroplane gives an impression of the dynamic postal service.

Lichens

1st Class Common Orange Lichen.
2nd Class Puffed Shield Lichen.
Lichens belong to the group of spore-plants. These two new definitives are designed by Erik Bruun.
In earlier times lichens played an important role, amongst other things, as food, as medicine and in dyes. Many lichens have the ability to destroy bacteria and have been used as ingredient in certain salves.

Church of Lemland

1.90 Church of Lemland.
The church of Lemland lies in an old seafarer parish. The oldest part of the present church dates back to the 12th century. Some time later the tower was built, probably at the end of the 12th century. In later years many changes were made to the building. The church has many beautiful wooden sculptures.

Cross-country

On 9 October 1999, the date of issue of this stamp, for the first time the Finnish Championships cross-country is held in Aland.
