Cultural City

In the context of Luxembourg and the Grand Region, European Capital of Culture 2007, of which Luxembourg Post is an exclusive partner, we pay homage to those emblematic places of culture in Luxembourg which have not been featured on a postage stamp until now. The series of three postage stamps show the Museum of Modern Art MUDAM, the Neumünster Abbey Meeting Center, and Rock Center. The Belgian Post in Malines printed the stamps in sheets of ten postage stamps.

Museum of Modern Art MUDAM

Opened on 1 July 2006 after more than a decade of planning and construction, the Grand Duke Jean Museum of Modern Art has been built on the site of the former Fort Thüngen in Luxembourg-Kirchberg. The exceptional museum building, which integrates seamlessly within the framework of the ancient military works of Three Acorns Park and the architecture of the Place de I'Europe district, is by the Leoh Ming Pei renowned for his museum designs.

Neumünster Abbey

The Neumünster Abbey Cultural Meeting Center is situated in the Grund district and has provided an interesting cultural program since 28 May 2004. The CCRN incorporates a group of very diverse elements, which are dedicated to cultural communication. The Robert Krieps Hall is now a theatre. The former military hospital, now called the Robert Bruch Building housing the Pierre Werner French-German-Luxembourg Cultural Institute and the European Institute of Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe, the 3700 m2 central square used for open air events in good weather. The Lucien Wercollier cloister, and the agora (a large inner court covered by a transparent glass roof), whose modern style and architectural lightness seem to engage in a dialogue with the serenity of the venerable surrounding walls, together make this a unique cultural center.

Rock Center

The Rock Center of Amplified Music, opened in September 2005 with a free and explosive concert by the group Prodigy. Located on the former industrial site of Esch-Belval, this Rock Center is one of the first buildings of the new city emerging from the vast lands dominated by abandoned blast furnaces of the former center of the Luxembourg iron & steel industry. The Rock Center not only includes two modular concert halls, it also includes a resource center with rehearsal halls, a semi-professional recording studio, and musical archives in a multimedia area.
