Treaties of Rome

50th Anniversary of the Treaties of Rome

An important anniversary is being celebrated this year, the 50th anniversary of the treaties forming the European Economic Community (EEC) and the European Community of Atomic Energy (ECAE). On 25 March 1957, the representatives of the 6 founding countries of the European Union (Germany, Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg, The Netherlands) signed in Rome these 2 historic treaties.

Economic development

In fact, the treaty of the EEC, commonly called the "Treaty of Rome", has influenced to this day the economic development and, as a result, the politics of Europe. It solidified the process of European reconstruction started by the European Coal & Steel Community (ECSC). Created in 1951, this organization had promoted post-war political reconciliation and industrial growth, notably by the trade of coal and steel free of customs duties.
The Treaty of Rome surpassed the objectives of the ECSC by firmly establishing a generalized common market.

Two new postage stamps

Two new postage stamps have been created to honor this important date in the history of modern Europe by Luxembourg. One illustrates the signatures of the 6 founding countries of the treaty. The other postage stamp is more graphical, reproducing the names of the signatories.
