Amedeo Modigliani

Promotion of Philately

This year the Promotion of Philately of the Belgian post brings you a foreign masterpiece from a Belgian art collection. The latest in this series is the painting Seated Nude by Amedeo Modigliani, which is on show at the Art Museum in Antwerp.
The painting is representative work of Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920), which mainly comprises depictions of women. Jean Libert designed this beautiful stamp sheet.

Modigliani in Paris

Modigliani arrived in Paris in early February in 1906. After a short stay at the hotel in Madeleine, he rented a studio in Montmartre. Max Jacob introduced him to Paul Guillaume, who became his dealer until 1916. During that year, Modigliani exhibited 15 paintings and 3 sculptures at the studio of Emile Lejeune in Paris. His meeting with Léopold Zborowsky, an exiled Polish poet, was determinant for his carrier as an artist. Amedeo Modigliani died of tubercular meningitis on 22 January 1920.

Collaboration on stamps

After the excellent collaboration with the Antwerp museum on the Christmas postage stamp for 2006, Hans Memling's Musical Angels, this is a great opportunity to point up the artistic importance of paintings on postage stamps.
