Art Nouveau was a reaction to academic teaching. The underlying principle was simple: the essence of aesthetics should be sought by studying nature rather than in ancient classical art forms. The French expression Art Nouveau (New Art) was first coined by Belgian art critics in the closing years of the 19th century and caught on fast with the opening of the Maison Art Nouveau art gallery by art dealer Siegfried Bind, in Paris in 1895. In every country where Art Nouveau blossomed, the movement found its own idiosyncratic forms of expression and lasted for varying lengths of time.Various names in different countriesArt Nouveau was also known under various names in different countries, sometimes inspired by the name of an artist or of a place. For instance, there was the Style Guimard or Ecole de Nancy (France), Jugendstil (Germany), Sezessionsstil (Austria), Modernismo (Spain), Stile Liberty (Italy), Arts and Crafts or Modern Style (Great Britain).International fashion in La Chaux-de-FondsIn 1900, Art Nouveau captured the true spirit of the age - the so-called Belle Epoque - and came to be understood as representing a specific taste in art. Although its finest manifestations were reserved for the more prosperous, it nevertheless became all the rage, with the "whiplash style" as its best-known motif. It was precisely in this form that Art Nouveau came to La Chaux-de-Fonds at the end of the 19th century was to be showcased in this watch-making metropolis in the shape of colorful stained-glass windows, tiles, stairwell decorations, stucco work, woodwork and wrought-iron features in many of its new buildings.Stamps in detailIssue: Switzerland, 7 March 2006Printing: offset by Austrian State Printing Office Stamp sizes: 33 x 28 mm Perforation: 13,75 Design: SuterSager, Zug More information Stamps Switzerland Postage Stamps 2006 Art Brut PostBus Switzerland Alpine ibex Swiss Christmas Customs 2005 Swiss Papal Guard |
