Founded in 1640, Helsinki University Library becomes the National Library of Finland in 2006. At the same time, the library's role is enhanced as a builder of the information society and a preserver of the cultural heritage. The revamp is celebrated with a stamp depicting the sixstorey book repository, the Rotunda.The book repository is an annexe designed by architect Gustav Nyström (1856-1917) and was built 1902-06. The main building is the work of architect Cart Ludvig Engel (1778-1840). This was built 1836-40 and opened after the completion of the interiors in 1845. Johan Vilhelm Snellman (1806-1881), a promoter of national education and a philosopher, economist and statesman as well as a writer of social literature and a journalist, will be commemorated in January with a miniature sheet containing four stamps. One of the stamps bears a portrait of Johan Vilhelm Snellman with a map as the background.Johan Snellman was born in Stockholm and grew up in Kokkola. He attended school in Oulu, studied at university in Turku and Helsinki, and he later lived in and was a powerful influence in Kuopio, Helsinki and other places. The map symbolizes his numerous changes of residence and his travels. Snellman was a frequent visitor to Stockholm and St Petersburg. He also traveled widely in continental Europe. The map image continues on the adjacent stamp, which is on the theme of Finland's first train. Above the train there is a thick line on the map, describing Finland's first rail network.
