Domfil stamp catalogue CatsCats on stamps
Domfil is a well known Spanish publisher of stamp catalogues and stamp albums. For both articles the firm specialized up till now in the thematic field, but recently the firm also publishes some country stamp catalogues.Catalogue for collectors of cats stampsSome years ago Domfil created a catalogue for the collectors of stamps with pictures of cats. The first edition got a very good response. One of these days the second edition of this catalogue was emitted. In 227 pages the catalogue shows all the stamps of the world with a picture of a cat.Eldest cat stamp is the stamp of SpainThe eldest cat stamp is the stamp of Spain from 1930 already. This stamp was emitted due to the Ibero-American exposition of Sevilla. On the stamp of 1 Pta with the Spirit of St. Louis and the Statue of Liberty in New York appeared on the bottom right a cat. This stamp was the first in the world on which a cat was pictured. The stamp belonged to a series of 8 stamps. In the list "Annual issues summary" at the end of the book you can see that it took 8 years before the next stamp with a cat appeared. In about 30 years after the first cat stamp has been emitted there were only seven stamps emitted with a (tiny) cat as a detail in the picture of which there were four Spanish stamp. The first real (but in stone) cat stamp only turned up in the Netherlands in 1962 (page 108). From then on more cat stamps appeared. About forty years after the first appearance of a cat on a stamp you can begin to speak of a reasonable number of stamps with a cat worth collecting. Other countries followed and a new stamp collectors theme was born.Domfil catalogueThe text of the new Domfil catalogue is stated both in Spanish and in English. On page 1 the catalogue begins with Afghanistan. The last country on page 227 is Zambia. After these pages follows an annual issues summary in which you can see that the eldest chess stamp indeed is from Bulgaria. The last stamp of 2003 is from the country Yugoslavia. After these pages follows an alphabetical list of the countries (in Spanish as well as in English) in which cat stamps have been emitted and the page number on which you can find the stamps from a specific country. Only stamps with a cat theme are pictured hereFor every emission you will find the title of the emission and the emission year and date. Every stamp is pictured with a reproduction at a 50% scale of the actual size. That is a little bit small but the pictures are in full colour and the reproductions are very good. Under the reproductions of the stamps you will find the data for the individual stamps. Only stamps with a cat theme are pictured here. Before every cat stamp the Domfil number is mentioned first, then the nominal value of the stamp and a short description of the stamp.Beneath the individual stamps you will find – and that is very special – the numbers for the stamps from the famous catalogues Yvert & Tellier, Scott, Michel and sometimes Unificato. It is very handy for collectors that these catalogue numbers are mentioned here so they will have a bridge from their collectors theme to country stamp collections. Domfil numberingThe Domfil numbering of the stamps consists of three letters for the country, the three last figures of the emission year and an order number. For example: the number FJI-001.11 corresponds to the 11th stamp of Fiji (page 61), issued in the year 2001. The countries are ordered in alphabetical order (of the Spanish names). Within a country the stamps are mentioned in a strict chronological order.Making use of the country table at the end of the catalogue you will for instance find the cat stamps of the Netherlands on page 108 under the Spanish country name Holanda and those of the Democratic Federal Republic on page 4 under the Spanish country name Alemania Democratica. Market valuesThe market values of the chess stamps are quoted in Euros and in US dollars.Handsome catalogueFor the collectors of cat stamps this catalogue is a very handsome one. The catalogue is an easy-reference manual; it gives enough information for the not-specialized collector. The reproductions are excellent. An important thing is that the catalogue stays flat when it is in use.You can get a copy of the catalogue from your local stamp dealer.
