Escalade

History on stamp

Escalade In 1602, Geneva was a Protestant city state that took a pride in its many freedoms, but was often threatened by its neighbours. With its favourable location on the lake, the city of Geneva was a constant source of political, economic and religious irritation to Duke Charles Emmanuel of Savoy from Piedmond. However, this was nothing new for Geneva whose history during the previous century had been characterised by skirmishes and battles. Peace did not come until the 17th century, and the night of 11/12 December 1602 was to lay the foundation for it.
In their fight for freedom, the inhabitants of Geneva defended their city on that night with extraordinary courage and bravery. So this 2002 tribute to their memory and fearlessness is truly well deserved.

How Geneva was saved

Four hundred years ago, in December 1602, Geneva experienced a nightmare situation. In those two days, attacks on winter nights were not usual, but Duke Charles Emmanuel wanted to take the city by surprise. He propped scaling ladders against the city walls and tried to infiltrate the sleeping city. Although the soldiers were careful, they did not go unnoticed. The alarm was sounded and thanks to the fast action and bravery of the Genevans, the soldiers who already made it inside were prevented from opening the city gates.
The defending citizens carried the battle before the gates, attacking the troops outside the walls. And after hours of bitter fighting, Geneva was saved.
