National symbols on first Finnish euro-stamps

Finland main theme on euro stamps

The stamps for the year 2002 will have the Finnishness as their main theme. Stamps will remain national even during the time of the euro, and only Finnish stamps will be accepted as postage in Finland. The stamps picturing the modern Finnish heraldic lion and the Finnish flag, to be issued on 1 January, will be the first euro-denominated stamps.

Finnish landscape

In harmony with the Finnishness theme, the stamps for the next year (2002) present the national bird, flower and tree, the swan, the lily of the valley, and the birch, respectively.
The stamp featuring a 1905 painting by victor Westerholm shows a typical Finnish landscape. The Finnish bedrock will also be one of the new topics. In addition, a stamp on Lapland and a stamp booklet on the Gulf of Finland containing five stamps will be issued next year.

Eleven stamps wil be issued on New Year's Day

Eleven stamps wil be issued on New Year's Day, after which new stamps will be issued on 6 March, 15 April, 3 May, 9 October and on 1 November 2002.
In total 21 issues including 39 different stamps will be released during the year 2002.

Stamp designers

The first euro-denominated stamps will be designed by leading graphic designers and artists familiar from the previous years: Erik Bruun, Juha Flinkman, Asser Jaaro, Pirkko Juvonen, Mika Launis, Pekka Loiri and others.
