On December 1, 1999, the Unesco World Heritage Committee decided to inscribe 24 Flemish and 6 Walloon belfries and their adjacent buildings on the World Heritage List. Two of them are now depicted on a postage stamp; the belfry of Binche and that of Dixmude.Town hall of BinchThe town hall of Binch and it's belfry constitute one and the same Gothic construction. The main facade is put up in Bavay sandstone and bricks and sandstone. This structure is probably standing on the spot where the first "maison dou bourc" was situated.At the end of the 19th century, the city ordered a general restoration, under the command of the architect Langerock with the cooperation of the historian Ernest Matthieu. DixmudeThe impressive belfry, with town hall, of Dixmude is situated between the two wings of the city hall. The first city hall dates from 1425 and was extended in 1567. In the 19th century, a new neo-Gothic building arose, designed by architect Louis Delacenserie of Bruges. This monumental building with stairs tower was completely devastated during the First World War.
