On 9 May 2001 Aland issued a stamp dedicated to water. This year's Europe stamp tells us about the important role water plays in our life.

Excellent fishing opportunities

The sea has offered the people in Aland excellent fishing opportunities. Fishing was mainly a way of earning one's living and of the total catch about 93 per cent consists of Baltic herring and sprat.

If the design of the stamp seems familiar you are absolutely right. Last time Aland had the pleasure of seeing the characteristic style of artist Kurt Simons, who designed the two greeting stamps issued in 1996.
