The Orienteering World Championships in August 2001 is celebrated with a special stamp, issued on 16 May 2001.Orienteering in FinlandIn 1979 the World Orienteering Championships were held for the first time in Finland. This year competitors from over 50 countries are expected. Orienteering is generally considered a typically Nordic sport, but is also very popular in Central Europe.Stamp designed by Ken NikanderThe designer, Ken Nikander, was inspired by the form of a compass in his work. The stamp features a special double perforation: the centre of the rectangular stamp is detachable, forming a perfectly valid, round stamp.Nikander also designed the stamp's FDC and postmark.
