Tribute to rescuersThree new stampsLuxembourg issued a series of three stamps on 22 May 2001 dedicated to rescuers. The series pays a tribute to volunteers and professionals who are ready to risk their health and even their lives to save accident victims and the sick whose lives are in peril.
Helicopter (18 fr)The advantages of rescue by helicopter seems obvious: the doctor and rescue professionals can gain access to areas cut off from land-based access or communication, and are not held up by traffic-jams which often paralyse highway traffic at certain hours of the day.The extraordinary speed with which these rescues can be carried out effectively has already led to saving the lives of many people. Rescue divers (30 fr)The national Civil Protection Service of Luxembourg has maintained an era when aquatic pastimes became very popular, a group of divers made up about 25 frogmen.During the summer season, the rescuers are on alert, especially from their surveillance points on the banks of Upper Sūre Lake. Each year they are able to save dozens of people on vacation who find themselves in a variety of difficult situations. Fire fighters (45 fr)In days gone by, fire fighters were the primary source of organised rescue services. Today, there are 9884 volunteer fire fighters in Luxembourg.Fire fighters have traditionally been trained to do battle with fire, their sphere of activity is now more varied: whether it is necessary to remove a person from a car wreck, to pump water from a flooded cellar, or to prevent the escape of toxic or radioactive materials. Modern life-saving services are provided with an expertise acquired after a long period of sustained training.
