Spore-plants as new definitivesNew series of definitives
A new series of definitives of Aland, picturing spore-plants, will be issued in January as a continuation of last year's stamps with lichen. In 2001 they depict swamp horsetail, stiff club-moss and polypody.Spore-plantsSpore-plants have neither stamen nor pistil. They multiply with the help of spores that are formed on the plant and are disseminated by the wind. The spores then grow into new plants.Swamp horsetailSwamp horsetail (1.9 mk) is a meter-high horsetail with a stem that sometimes is completely without twigs. This plant thrives in water and swampy places such as in ditches and along seashores.Stiff club-mossThe stiff club-moss (2.8 mk) is an evergreen club-moss that is often sold as a Christmas decoration. It grows crawling along the ground in long tendrils.PolypodyThe polypody (3.5 mk) is a fern and this plant is also an evergreen. It has individual, partite leaves that can be up to 30 cm long. The leaves grow from a horizontal stem that has a sweet taste of liquorice.Stamps in detailDate of issue: 2 January 2001.Size: 26 x 35.4 mm. Design: Erik Bruun.
