Helping children

Since its creation in 1912, the Swiss Pro Juventute Foundation has done a lot for children, adolescents and families in Switzerland, taking a public stand in favour of a society where the rights of children and young people are really practised.

In Appenzell, on 6 December, a quiet horse is harnessed to a brightly painted sleigh and Santa Claus and his assistant, known as "Schmutzli", go visiting children who eagerly look forward to the gifts they bring for weeks in advance.

School's over for good. Little Albert takes leave of his friends and goes to St. Gallen to train as a confectioner. But painting pictures on gingerbread revives his great wish to be a painter, so he returns home to his village and paints his own story in the book "Little Albert".

In winter , when there is snow, the kids just can't wait to get outdoors to race down the slopes on their sledges, squealing with pleasure.

Little Albert, the little boy from Appenzell, dreams of being an artist but is afraid to tell anybody, because he thinks his fellow pupils will make fun of him. He confides only in his loyal friends Bless, the Appenzell dog.

The designer

Albert Manser was born in 1937. He is the son of an Appenzell farmer. He loved drawing from an early age, taking his inspiration from the world around him.
Manser is now a famous and internationally acknowledged naive artist.
