Luxembourg September 2000



Art

Will Kesseler On 27 September 2000 Luxembourg issued some new stamp series on the subjects Art, Historical heritage, Iron and Steel Industry and Royalty.
Three stamps were issued with the work of art.

Will Kesseler

Will Kesseler was born in Mersch in 1899 and died in Luxembourg in 1983. He is considered to be one of Luxembourg's best colourists. After his rather academic beginnings, Kesseler turned to abstract painting in 1951.

Joseph Probst

Joseph Probst was born in Vianden in 1911 and died in Junglinster in 1997. He began as a landscape artist, but is considered as a main exponent of the lyrical abstract genre. Probst began to practise abstract art in 1950.

Mett Hoffmann

Mett Hoffmann (1914-1993) is known for his paintings, stained glass windows and mosaics. Some of his outstanding works are at the European Centre at Kirchberg, as well as several churches.

Wenzel Circular Walk

Wenzel Circular Walk Its name being a tribute to Duke Wenceslas II (1346-1419), the Wenzel circular walk is a cultural trail created in 1995. Its aim is to bring the character of the city of Luxembourg, both as it was in the Middle Ages and as it is today.

Vauban Circular Walk

Due to the success of the Wenzel walk and in order to highlight what was one of the greatest achievements of XVII century military architecture, the Luxembourg National Sites and Monuments service decided in 1995 to create a new educational walk named the 'Circuit Vauban'.
Vauban Circular Walk This 4 km long discovery trail retraces the history of Luxembourg at the time of the confrontation between the Bourbons and Habsburgs.

Iron and Steel

Blast furnace B Blast furnace 'B' went into operation in 1970. It was the last of its kind and was in operation until the end of 1997. The site in Esch-Belval will become a prototype project in the conversion and renewal of industrial wasteland.
The idea is to create a cultural site of industrial and archaeological interest.

Royalty

Royalty On 4 March 1998, Prince Henri was appointed Lieutenant-Representative of his Royal Highness, the Grand Duke. This means that henceforth, his orders have the same authority as those of the Grand Duke himself.
The Prince was sworn in as Head of State on 28 September 2000.
The two new stamps show the royal couple, Prince Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa Mestre.

Values: 18 (sheet of 12 stamps) and 100 (souvenir sheet) fr.
Size: 41.1 x 34.45 (18 fr) and 48.75 x 38.15 (100 fr).
