Expo 2000

Amongst others Norway issued two stamps on June 2, 2000, depicting on the world exposition Expo 2000, held this year in Hanover, Germany.

Norway Post presented two stamps

On the opening day of the Expo 2000 Norway Post presented two stamps to mark this event. One of Norway's most prominent contemporary artists, Marianne Heske, is the artist of the stamps with the face value 4.20 and 6.30 kr. "Heske is an innovative artist, and her two extremely untraditional stamps have added to the diversity of this year's stamp programme". Heske was also responsible for the artistic design of the Norwegian pavilion at the exposition.

What I find in nature

Marianne Heske's way of working is to commit natural subjects to videotape. Marianne Heske then freezes selected sequences and photographs them with an ordinary camera. She scans the slides into a computer and processes them electronically before transferring them to silk, glass, brass, aluminium or some other material. "I use what I find in nature. Everything is already there. I don't make anything new. People are disappointed when they discover that I make 'housewife's' videos!"

Marianne Heske

The designer Marianne Heske was born in 1946 in Alesund. She studied at the Bergen College of Art, Craft and Design and later in France, England and the Netherlands.
She made her debut at Norway's annual Autumn Exhibition in 1970. After that she had a number of solo and group exhibitions at home and abroad.
She was voted Artist of the Eighties, but is possibly best known for exhibiting a 400-year-old hay barn from Tafjord at an art exhibition in Paris in 1980.
