Great Britain People and Places 6 June 2000

New stamps series

On 6 June 2000 Great Britain released a new series in the Millennium collection. Walsall Security Printers printed the stamps with the themes People and Places in gravure or lithography.

Millennium Greens

Creating hundreds of new green spaces throughout England is the theme behind the 2nd class Millennium Greens/ All Regions.
The project, led by the Countryside Commission, is making a positive contribution to the quality of life for more than 250 communities in England by creating their own Millennium Green by the end of the year. The project works with urban and rural communities throughout England to improve the lives of those who currently have only limited access to attractive open spaces.

Gateshead Millennium Bridge

The Gateshead Millennium Bridge (1st class) features an image of the new Millennium Bridge linking the developments on the Gateshead side of the River Tyne with the new look Newcastle Quayside.
The 900-tonne pedestrian and cycle bridge will operate like the giant lid of a closed eye slowly opening, turning on a pivot on either side of the river to form an arch under which ships will be able to pass.

Mile End Park

The transformation of one of the east end's open spaces is behind the 45p stamp Mile End Park/ London.
Mile End Park is a unique urban recreational space, which offers safe, accessible and attractive recreational opportunities for around 50,000 local residents. Sports facilities include a swimming pool, climbing wall, cycling and athletics tracks. There are also ecology and children's centres, gallery space and a concert stadium.

On the Line

Two photographes are combined to create the design for the 65p stamp On the Line/ All Regions. The image, which merges an African hut with a thatched cottage, focusses attention on the future of our planet and our role as global citizens. The project was founded by Oxfam, Channel 4 and the World Wildlife Fund UK and focusses on the peoples, cultures and environments of the eight countries in Europe and West Africa, which lie on the Greenwich Meridian Line. The On the Line project believes that the people of these countries share more than just a common time zone, and that communities have much to gain by exploring their cultural differences and similarities.
