Great Britain 2000 stamp programme

Royal Mail's Millennium Stamp Collection

Royal Mail will issue 4 stamps each month in 2000. These 48 stamps will form the "Royal Mail's Millennium Collection" and will provide a snapshot of Britain today. The 2000 collection will be based solely on photographs.
The themes are:

Above and Beyond (January)
Fire and Light (February)
Water and Coast (March)
Life and Earth (April)
Art and Craft (May)
People and Places (June)
Stone and Soil (July)
Tree and Leaf (August)
Mind and Matter (September)
Body and Bone (October)
Spirit and Faith (November)
Sound and Vision (December)

The first set of stamps is Above and Beyond

The collection begins in dramatic style with the face of a barn owl staring out from the 19p stamp. This stamp shows Munchester Castle, gardens and Owl Centre and is a leading tourist attraction situated in Ravenglass on the Cumbrian Coast. This centre houses the headquarters of the World Owl Trust.

Galaxy of stars on 26p stamp

On the 26p stamp appears a galaxy of stars in a brilliant night sky. The National Space Centre in Leicester is of international importance and includes university-based research groups.

Torrs Walkway/New Mills is the subject of the 44p stamp

Torrs Walkway/New Mills is the subject of the 44p stamp. The Torrs Aerial Walkway project is led by Derbyshire County Council and involves a scheme devised following public demand to create a passable route through the gorge at the Torrs, New Mills. This is an area of exceptional natural beauty and unique industrial archaeological heritage.

Seabird Centre on 64p stamp

A coloured flock of gannets is on the 64p stamp Seabird Centre, North Berwick. The Seabird Centre is a registered charity which aims to increase public awareness and appreciation of Scotland's rich natural environment. Each year over 150.000 seabirds return to the islands off North Berwick and the aim of the Seabird Centre is to create an all-weather wildlife and environmental centre.
