Harry Potter on UK stamps

JK Rowling's bespectacled hero Harry Potter is now available on postage stamps. The stamps, issued on 17th July 2007 through a special licensing arrangement with Warner Bros and Bloomsbury, are a big hit in the United Kingdom.

Rowland Hill

The English postal reformer Rowland Hill was born in 1795 in Kidderminster (Worcestershire). His father managed a school in Birmingham. In 1807 Rowland Hill became a student-teacher at his father's school. As a sideline Rowland Hill was an inventor, although most of his ideas were never used.

Royal Mail surprised stamp collectors in July 2006 with a nice collection of ten stamps, portraying famous British men and women. De La Rue Security Print printed the stamps designed by Peter Willberg in gravure.

Modern architecture on postage stamps

Previous stamp issues that specifically featured modern architecture were British architects in Europe in 1987, and British Architecture back in 1971. New and brave buildings offer innovative and dramatic ways of bending materials to suit our purposes. As works of art, it is fitting that Royal Mail has dedicated a stamp issue to some of them.
