Battle of the Ardennes on stamps On 16 December 1944, the German army launched a massive counter-offensive on a front, which extended from Monschau to Echternach. Under the command of Generalfeldmarschall Von Rundstedt, 250,000 men launched an assault on allied positions. The Battle of the Ardennes had begun.

Bronze Age in Finland

Bronze Age A miniature sheet comprising two stamps featuring the Bronze Age (ca 1500-500 B.C.) burial site at Sammallahdenmäki was issued on 8 September 2004. The miniature sheet was designed by professor Erik Bruun. The site is located at Kivikylä in the municipality of Lappi, province of Satakunta. The unique area, featuring 33 burial cairns within less than a kilometre, is situated on a high ridge.

Gulf of Finland 2004

The fourth issue in the Gulf of Finland stamp series features finds from five ship wrecks. The stamps were printed in a four-colour offset process with gold metallic as a fifth colour. The artefacts are embossed. The total print run was 720,000.

Christmas in Finland

The Christmas stamps feature drawings by painter and illustrator Martta Wendelin (1893-1986). The stamp with the 0.45 € denomination corresponding to the special rate for Christmas cards features a small boy writing a letter to Santa. The picture is a detail of a drawing first published as a New Year card in 1936, gravure printed by Otava. The other stamp, denominated at 0.65 €, features a decorated branch of a Christmas tree.

The year 2006 marks a jubilee of the Finnish postage stamp. The first Finnish postage stamps were issued in March 1856. At that time some 60 countries had issued national postage stamps.
